Optherion is a biotechnology company developing disease-modifying therapeutics targeting diseases of the immune system. The primary diseases of focus include age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and a couple of rare renal diseases (atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome & dense deposit disease). AMD affects roughly 50 million people world-wide and is the #1 cause of blindness in the developed world. The renal diseases, while rare (each with roughly 10,000 sufferers in the world), can be devastating."



SeeClickFix helps to mobilize citizens to solve problems in neighborhoods across the U.S. The New Haven start-up developed an interactive content Web site that gives neighborhood residents a powerful new voice, allowing them to identify issues and rally for change and improvements in their neighborhoods – all online. Residents can identify specific problems, ask neighbors to weigh in on the issue and monitor progress.



In 2000, New Haven students developed a way to automate student financial aid distributions while complying with banking regulations. That gave students more access and cut costs for schools. Today, Higher One serves college students nationwide. New Haven's location between New York City and Boston has helped the company recruit talent – one reason why Higher One was listed on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 list in 2009.

Hummel Bros. Quality Meat Products has been a New Haven landmark since 1933, when brothers Robert and William Hummel borrowed $1,000 to buy an old sausage company on Congress Avenue. Vespoli USA built its state-of-the-art plant to build racing shells in 1986. Founder Mike Vespoli, who started rowing as a team walk-on at Georgetown University, has dedicated his life to better, faster boats. Vespoli was the first to combine naval architecture and hydrodynamics expertise to design a revolutionary shell. The resulting Vespoli boats have won countless gold, silver and bronze medals in rowing competitions worldwide.
