JS Genetics develops and markets accurate, convenient and low-cost DNA screening tests for underserved medical conditions in newborns and adolescents.  The company, founded in 2004, grew out of Yale University research.  Its New Haven laboratory is one of the few independent facilities in the city with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment certification. JS Genetics is focused on genetic diseases, predisposition to learning disabilities and behavioral diseases.  Its innovative research has been funded by several National Institutes of Health grants. The company intends to commercialize its first product in 2010.

Axerion, a New Haven start up founded around two novel technology platforms from a Yale University laboratory, is dedicated to cellular regeneration. The company is working to develop a fusion protein to help repair spinal cord injury, which may have applications with other conditions. Axerion is also working on a small molecule that could be useful in preventing memory loss in Alzheimer patients.  The company is currently seeking funding from a variety of sources to pursue its research.

Vion Pharmaceuticals is working to extend the lives of cancer patients by creating innovative cancer treatments.   The Yale spinout, incorporated in March 1992, has been publicly traded since 1995.  Today, Vion has two anticancer compounds in human clinical testing, Onrigin(tm) and Triapine.(r)  Onrigin affects DNA to prevent cancer cells from  reproducing.  Triapine prevents the replication of tumor cells by blocking a critical step in DNA synthesis.

Optherion is a biotechnology company developing disease-modifying therapeutics targeting diseases of the immune system.  The primary diseases of focus include age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and a couple of rare renal diseases (atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome & dense deposit disease).  AMD affects roughly 50 million people world-wide and is the #1 cause of blindness in the developed world.  The renal diseases, while rare (each with roughly 10,000 sufferers in the world), can be devastating."
