Architecture

The Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers, stand in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  But the global landmark was conceived and designed in offices over a Starbucks café near Chapel and High Streets in New Haven.

Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects (formerly Cesar Pelli & Associates), the firm that designed Petronas, has operated in New Haven since 1977.  It is one of nearly 75 architectural firms doing business in the city, an industry employing nearly 500 people and designing monuments for the world.

New Haven’s burgeoning architectural community is anchored by the Yale School of Architecture, whose faculty and graduates continue to leave their mark on cityscapes worldwide.  The school’s extended “family” includes world  famous architects such as Cesar Pelli, Kent Bloomer, Turner Brooks, Herb Newman, current architecture school dean Robert Stern, and many others.

The diversity of styles practiced by New Haven’s architectural firms is reflected in the community’s own skyline.  The influences of world-class architects and cutting-edge innovation has made New Haven a unique laboratory for building design.
